August 23, 2012

I had a hot lunch/cold lunch board for students to drag their name to the correct choice of lunch for the day.  A paw print was the picture and attached to it was their first name.  We had squeaks from those who have not used a board as they dragged the paw print to the correct area.  My main problem was that they put their paws on top of each other.  It was too confusing to try to count hot and cold lunch!  I will revise the board.  I also used bright green for the boys' names.  It did not show up well.  The girls' names were purple and easy to read.

Today the children were writing three things about their summer on a paper that was divided into three sections.  The top part is where they drew a picture.  The bottom is where they added a sentence to go with the picture.  Students brought their work up to the document camera and shared their work.  As each section was read, they flipped up the picture.  Afterwards, the children told the author three things that they had learned about them.  It helped students connect to one another and learn things about their new friends.  I could look at their work and quickly assess who knew how to write a sentence, punctuate and find our budding artists in the group.  We did not get through everyone and will continue on Friday.

For our preview to science Woodland forest unit, I shared an Ekoo video where the grandmother compared growing up in a rainforest to her granddaughter's woodland forest.  It was short but brought up important facts that I will share during the unit.
